General

Qioptiq Space Technology entered the space business in 1970 as Pilkington Space Technology. Using the Pilkington expertise in glass manufacture we developed our unique range of cerium doped glass types which have been utilised on over 2500 satellites worldwide. During the past 35 years our glass compositions, together with our bespoke coating designs, had positioned Qioptiq Space Technology as the major supplier of both solar cell Coverglasses and Optical Solar Reflectors to the World Space Industry.

Over 35 Years in the Business

From the first Cerium Doped glass, CMS in 1970 followed by CMX, CMG through to CMO Qualification in 1998, Qioptiq Space Technology have been at the forefront of development to meet the demanding requirements of Space Qualified products.

The company have developed and qualified a wide range of coatings for Silicon and Gallium Arsenide cells, and Optical Solar Reflectors for Thermal control applications. Our approach applies proven technologies and materials in new ways to improve performance tailored to mission requirements.

Qioptiq Space Technology is, and will continue to be dedicated to the design, development, qualification and manufacture of Coverglasses and Optical Solar Reflectors.

Products include:

Coverglasses

  • Protect the vital cells from the damage, which would otherwise occur due to ultra-violet, electron and proton irradiation.
  • Manufactured from ultra thin cerium doped glass, evolved through intensive research and development
  • Have been chosen for a substantial number of major satellite programmes for both civilian and military applications in Europe, USA and Japan.

Optical solar Reflectors

  • Used for the thermal control of spacecraft. They are used on the sun facing sides of satellites
  • Reflect incoming solar radiation whilst simultaneously radiating internally generated heat.

Research & Development

Research and development is carried out on site, and as a result, the company product range is continually being improved and is at the leading edge of space technology.
