All final assembly and test is carried out in a controlled environment cleanroom containing Class 100 laminar flow air booths.
The department is divided into four flexible flow line
manufacturing cells, under the control of team leaders who are
responsible for the complete assembly and test process though to final
despatch. The Test Engineering Department provides and maintains Test
Equipment to support the Quality Control of products in development and
Production. Test Equipment is designed primarily for in house use
although the company have produced Test Equipment and procedures for
acceptance testing of our products at customer premises. Much of our
Test Equipment is purpose built specific for the particular product
requirement. The department use interferometers, some commercial and some
designed in house, over a range of wavelengths from 632 nm right up to
10.6µm, to test our products and components for optical quality and
alignment. We also have an environmental facility with 5 thermal
chambers and 2 vibration machines on which we carry out Environmental
Stress Screening and Qualification Tests. The staff of approximately 70 highly trained and
multi-skilled technicians provide a flexible capability to produce a
wide range of products varying in both complexity and quantity Production rates vary from 1-off prototypes up to volume of 500-off per month. This product mix is extremely variable, with up to 30 different products being assembled at any one time.
